SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Western Washington rallied from a two-game deficit to advance to the championship match of the NCAA Division II Volleyball Pacific Regional with a 23-30, 26-30, 30-21, 30-25, 15-12 victory over defending champion UC San Diego on Friday.
The No. 24 Vikings (23-4) will face top-seeded Cal State San Bernardino, a 3-1 winner over Cal State L.A., in the regional title match at 7 tonight.
Trailing 11-8 in the fifth game, WWU scored five straight points on kills by outside hitters Emily Castro and Jaime Anderson and three straight attack errors by UCSD for a 13-11 lead. The Tritons got within 13-12 before Western scored the final two points on an Anderson kill and a combined block by Anderson and Angie Alvord on game point.
Men’s basketball
Seattle University shot 66.7 percent from the field in the second half to pull away from Humboldt State for a 92-80 victory in the Elgin Baylor Tipoff Classic at the Connolly Center. Ricky Berry led the way with a career-high 18 points.
• Rob Will had 19 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks to lead Seattle Pacific to a season-opening 81-68 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in the Sodexho Tip-Off Classic at Brougham Pavilion.
• A late rally fell just short as Western Washington opened its season with a 74-68 loss to Cal State San Bernardino at the Sodexho Tip-Off Classic. Ira Graham led the Vikings with a game-high 18 points.
• Central Washington overcame a 14-point first-half deficit to force overtime, but a free throw by Dan Bergeron with two seconds left was the difference as Notre Dame de Namur beat Central 85-84 in the Wildcat Classic in Ellensburg.
• A cold-shooting second half for Northwest University spelled the difference as Lewis & Clark took a 75-67 victory in Portland. The Eagles (2-2) hit just 35.7 percent of their shots after the break.
Women’s basketball
Laina Sobczak scored 13 points on 6-of-6 shooting to lead Seattle University to a season-opening 75-51 victory over Northwest U. in Kirkland.
• Western Washington held Brigham Young-Hawaii without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes and went on to claim a 69-39 victory in a nonconference game in Bellingham. Sarah Schramm led the Vikings (2-2) with 14 points.
• Central held North Alabama to 32 percent field-goal shooting, and Hanna Hull led all players with 16 points as the Wildcats rolled to a 75-57 victory at the Sodexho Tip-Off Classic at Brougham Pavilion.
Volleyball
Washington State gave No. 10 UCLA a good scare before falling 31-29, 30-21, 30-17 in Los Angeles. Jackie Albright had a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs for the Cougars (9-20, 0-15 Pac-10).
• Sacramento State pinned a 24-30, 30-28, 30-11, 30-17 loss on Eastern Washington (14-14, 12-4 Big Sky Conference) in Cheney.
Men’s soccer
Chris Sauter scored his first goal of the season in the 109th minute to send Santa Clara to a 1-0 victory and end Gonzaga’s season in Spokane. The Bulldogs (9-6-4, 4-4-4 West Coast Conference) went 0-3-1 the last three weeks of the season.
Swimming
Washington State recorded a 157-137 victory over Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Shawna Keller led the Cougars’ charge with wins in the 200 freestyle (2 minutes, 8.65 seconds), 200 breaststroke (2:40.34) and 200 individual medley (2:24.49).

• The Seattle Pacific women’s soccer team (22-0) will take on Incarnate Word in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division II championship. The winner of the game, set for 1 p.m. at Interbay Stadium, will advance to the national semifinals Nov. 29 in Orange Beach, Ala.
• Stanford freshman Kellen Kiilsgaard, formerly a quarterback and defensive back at Auburn High School, was among five athletes named a National Football Foundation Western Region Scholar-Athlete for 2007. He will receive his award in New York on Dec. 4.
• The Seattle Bouldering Challenge is set for 11 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Stone Gardens, 2839 N.W. Market St. More than 200 competitors of all ages from the Pacific Northwest and Canada are expected to compete in various divisions.
